Electrical, mechanical, instrumentation and process control experience was gained, mainly in an electrical generation environment.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Electrical designs

Protection schemes, automated control systems, network communication (substation automation).Low voltage motor control centers, protection and control circuits for MV switchgear. Electrical reticulation systems. Back-up power systems – control interface, change-over and interlocking circuits.

Draughting

Design draughting, creating schematic drawings using CAD programs, editing, tracing, checking and marking-up of drawings. General draughting, panel layouts and mechanical cut-out designs.

Projects

Managed projects up to R1Mil. within budget and time constrains, co-ordinating, procurement, expediting, and quality control. Full technical and commercial responsibility for assigned projects.

Liaison with customers:

Attending meetings, establish and maintain communication channels with customers.

Commissioning

Electrical protection systems and primary equipment, electrical switchgear (MV & LV) as well as low voltage motor control centers. Various DCS and PLC systems, plant and process busses as well as SCADA interfaces and a variety of instrumentation devices and process loops. Optimization of process controllers.

Maintenance

General electrical equipment, electrical protection relays and related equipment, PLC’s and communication busses, battery chargers, UPS units, AC & DC drives.

Consulting, training and assessing maintenance procedures and activities.

Installation

ABB Power Generation, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa

Was assigned to refurbishment project at Arnot power station, South Africa (3 x 350MW coal-fired plant). Installation and commissioning of ABB's PROCONTROL system for boiler and turbine control and various control instruments. Duties, responsibilities:

Scheduling, periodical reporting to the commissioning manager.
QA record keeping.
Erection checks and commissioning of P14 cubicles and plant bus, commissioning and optimisation of various control instruments, loops and processes as well as the implementation (programming) and testing of various design changes.
Fault finding and calibration of various types of field instruments.
Maintenance on all equipment and instruments (hydraulic and air instruments and plant equipment included) till the plant was handed over to the customer.
Supervising the subcontractors commissioning technicians and erection supervisors.

Senior Technician - (July 1994 to April 1997)

Eskom PTM, Witbank, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Commissioning and maintaining various electrical protection equipment and relays for motors, transformers, generators,feeders etc.
Lead the commissioning team on various projects including the common electrical reticulation control system comprising of Siemens S5 PLC’s with H1 and L1 communication busses, COROS LS-C and CP527 HMI/SCADA systems. Interface of the fast bus transfer scheme as well as the start-up sequence and control interface of the 21MW gasturbine (used for "black start" purposes).

Technician - (January 1993 to June 1994)

Eskom Kendal Power Station, Witbank, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Maintaining, fault finding and repairs on variable speed controlled drives (AC & DC), Brushless exciters for 810MVA generators, battery chargers and UPS systems, fire detection and PA systems, electrical fence (security purposes) and basic fault finding and repairs on electronic cards.
